Local Author Book Fair September 26-28

The Friends of the Orange County Public Library are proud to present our second annual

Saturday, September 28, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Orange County Public Library 
Our featured authors this year will be Jill McCorkle and A. J. Mayhew. Both authors will be signing books. We will also have readings by this year’s Piedmont Laureate David Menconi, Hillsborough Poet Laureate Dee Stribling, Stephen Petrow, Erika Shearin Karres, special children’s book readings, and many, many more!
All authors’ books will be available for purchase at the Fair. Thank you to Purple Crow Books for selling books at this event.

We will also be holding additional readings: 
Thursday evening, September 26, 6:30-8:00 p.m., at Yonder on King Street
Friday evening, September 27, 7:00-8:30 p.m., in the Library Meeting Room
We hope you will all plan to turn out and celebrate Orange County authors. A full schedule of readings follows.

Hillsborough Local Book Fair Schedule of Events

The Friends of the Orange County Public Library present the Hillsborough Local Authors Book Fair on Saturday, November 24, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., hosted in the Main Branch of the Orange County Public Library. Shop “Small Business” Saturday and support our great local authors and bookstore. For more information, visit our Facebook Event page.

Here is the full list of readings that will be presented upstairs in the Library:

10 a.m. – 11 a.m.   Poet Laureate Jaki Shelton Green will give the keynote address.

11 a.m. – 12 p.m.   Barbara Claypole White, Morrow Dowdle, Carol Strickland, Samantha Bryant, Emily Beuhler, and Anne Anthony will read for 10 minutes each.

12 p.m. – 1 p.m.     Lee Smith will read for one hour.

1 p.m. – 2 p.m.       Anna Jean Mayhew will read for one hour.

2 p.m. – 3 p.m.       Laine Cunningham, Pam Baggett, Dori Anne Dupre, Elizabeth Hein, Harry Kavros, and Nancy Haines will read for 10 minutes each.

3 p.m. – 4 p.m.       2018 Piedmont Laureate Nancy Peacock will read for one hour.

These readings will be presented downstairs in the children’s area:

11 a.m. – 12 p.m.  Piedmont Laureate Emeritus John Claude Bemis

2 p.m. – 3 p.m.     Graphic novelist Max Dowdle

The Sales Area  (in the Meeting Room) will be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The following special signings will be held in the Sales Area:

Most other authors will be available all day for signings.

A reception will be held for authors and the general public from 4 p.m. – 5 p.m. in the meeting room. Light refreshments will be served.

Real-Life Ghost Stories
Friday, October 26, 7 p.m. on the lawn of the Burwell School in Hillsborough
This is a continuation of our popular event from last year and will get you in a Halloween mood. Fun for kids! Bring a chair or blanket to sit on.
Fall Book Sale
We’re adding an extra day to the book sale! 
Friends members only preview: Wednesday, November 7, 4-7:30 p.m.
Public book sale: Thursday, November 8, to Sunday, November 11, open 1/2 hour after library opening, close 1/2 hour before library closing
We need volunteers to work the book sale! Look for a signup sheet to be posted soon or email focplnc@gmail.com if you’re interested.
NEW: Local Author Book Fair
Saturday, November 24, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
This is a brand-new and very exciting event! Twenty-plus local authors will be on hand all day to do readings and sign books. “Shop Small Saturday” and stock up on books from local authors and Purple Crow Books for Christmas gifts.
Special author guests include:

We need volunteers for this special event! Volunteers are needed to organize and plan this event, publicize the event, help set up and break down, introduce author readings, assist authors with readings and signings, assist Purple Crow Books with sales, recruit Friends members, and more. Annual Meeting
Saturday, December 1, 10 a.m., Meeting Room of the Orange County Public Library
This will be a business meeting. We will review the year and elect a new Board of Directors. Initial 2019 Board meeting will immediately follow.

Reading and Reception for Nancy Peacock, Piedmont Laureate


The Friends of the Orange County Public Library welcomes Nancy Peacock, 2018 Piedmont Laureate. The public is invited to a reading and reception Monday, February 26, 7-8 p.m., in the meeting room of the Main Branch of the Orange County Public Library in Hillsborough, North Carolina.

Nancy Peacock has been writing since fourth grade. She is largely self-taught and well- mentored. She is the author of the novels Life Without Water (chosen as a New York Times Notable Book), Home Across the Road, and The Life and Times of Persimmon Wilson, as well as the memoir and “writing-in-the-real-world” guide A Broom of One’s Own: Words on Writing, Housecleaning, and Life.

Nancy runs writing workshops and retreats for women. Her free Prompt Writing Class has been active since 2003 and continues to gain in popularity. Nancy believes that telling stories, our own and those we invent, is a human right that we must all claim to heal our hurt world.

Book Signing and Reading with Lee Smith | Main Library
Tuesday, March 22, 6:00 p.m.

Celebrate the release of Lee Smith’s newest book, Dimestore. In this memoir, Smith writes about  her father’s dimestore in her hometown (the dimestore now gone, along with the original town); her relatives and the local characters; her mother’s long-cherished recipes and what they mean to her; the mental illness that courses through her family tree; and how her mountain culture made her a writer.

Saturday, March 26, 2:00-4:00 p.m.

Learn to structure and outline a book that appeals to audiences raised on television and motion pictures. Come with a book idea, a brief outline of your work in progress, and a large pad of paper and several different colored pens. To register, call Adult and Teen Services at 919.245.2536.

Katy is a North Carolina-based author who has written fifteen novels under several different pseudonyms. She is the author of the Dead Detective series, writing as Katy Munger (Angel Among Us and Angel of Darkness) and as Chaz McGee (Desolate Angel and Angel Interrupted); the Casey Jones detective series writing as Katy Munger; and the Hubbert & Lil mystery series, writing as Gallagher Gray.

Halloween at the Library

The little goblins, ghouls, and assorted Star Wars characters came out in full force to the Orange County Public Library on Halloween for trick-or-treating, games, crafts, a scavenger hunt, and taking selfies in front of a spooky backdrop. Local author Shannon Fitzgerald was on hand to read her children’s book, Halloween Night, and lead an activity with the kids. This event was co-sponsored by the Friends of the Library, and Friends President Tommy McNeill handled the introductions. It was a terrific event, and fun was had by all who attended.

literarychanteuse-comDrop-in to the Orange County Public Library anytime on Halloween (Saturday, October 31) between 12:00-5:00 p.m. for games, crafts, and a spooky scavenger hunt.  Come in costume and trick-r-treat around the library or take terror-ific selfies in a special photo booth.  At 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. local author Shannon Fitzgerald will read from her new picture book, Halloween Night.  This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Library. For all ages!

Announcing the Fall Book Sale

The Friends of the Orange County Public Library is hosting its fall book sale and sponsoring book readings by local authors Daniel Wallace, Gloria Glenn, and Joyce Allen. The authors’ books will be available for purchase at the readings, courtesy of Purple Crow Books.

catspjscoverDaniel Wallace, author of the best-selling novel Big Fish, will read from his book for young children, The Cat’s Pajamas, on Sunday at 1 p.m. Written and illustrated by Daniel, this picture book was crowd-published by Inkshares. It is the story of the time when cats actually wore pajamas, hence the phrase, “He’s the cat’s pajamas!”

Gloria Glenn will read from her children’s book, Caretta the Top Turtle, on Saturday at 10 a.m. This chapter book chronicles the life of a loggerhead sea turtle. Gloria, who lives in Mebane, has published short stories and poetry in Wee Wisdom and Highlights for Children.

Joyce Allen will read from The Threads Trilogy, a fantasy series for young adults, on Saturday at 1 p.m. Books 1 and 2 of The Threads Trilogy are out, and book 3 is coming soon. Joyce, who lives in Carrboro, is also the author of the adult novel Hannah’s House.

On Friday and Saturday, hardback book prices are $2.00, paperback books and DVDs are $1.00, and children’s books are $0.50. On Sunday, books can be purchased by the bag at a price of $5.00.

Annual Meeting and Author Brunch: December 5, 2015, 10 a.m. at the Library. Special guest to be announced.
